BillerudKorsnäs is investing big in Gruvön

The board of BillerudKorsnäs have today decided to carry out the biggest investment in the history of the company and one of the largest in Sweden in recent years – the investment is a new carton machine at the production plant in Gruvön. The investment is made in light of the increasing demand for sustainable packaging solutions for food and liquid products around the world.

The 5.7 million SEK investment means that a new carton machine will be built at the production plant in Gruvön and that renovations will be made in the existing pulp mill. The carton machine will have a capacity of 550,000 tons annually and will thus be one of the largest of its kind in the world. The machine will produce liquid packaging, cartonboard, food service board and liners. The investment project will begin immediately and the production is estimated to start during the first quarter of 2019.

–This is a historical decision for BillerudKorsnäs. The stable market growth for liquid packaging and other cartonboards together with our unique expertise within the field puts us in a perfect position to meet the global demand in the market. When we have evaluated different alternatives, the access to renewable raw material from sustainable forestry in the Nordic countries has been a very important consideration, says Per Lindberg, CEO and Group Chief Executive at BillerudKorsnäs.

With smart packaging solutions we can reduce our climate impact, pollution and dependence on fossil fuels at the same time as we improve food safety. The demand for sustainable solutions is growing all over the world as more and more stakeholders such as trademark owners, food trading companie and consumers are making conscious choices.
